On Friday 13 December 2019 twenty four Biology and Chemistry students travelled to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory near Cambridge to visit the internationally-renowned Genome Centre.  The students attended a lecture by Dame Janet Thornton, a Senior EMBL Research Scientist, entitled ‘Ageing and disease – what’s the link?’, where they learned about current research into theories of ageing, the role of computational biology, and experienced a scientific conference first-hand.  The students toured the impressive campus and saw laboratory work in action.  An excellent ‘speed-dating’ session allowed them to meet and question four scientists about their career paths and their current research; an interactive display introduced them to burgeoning field of careers in genetic counselling.  All in all an inspiring experience, giving the students a chance to imagine their own futures in science.
