BHASVIC student wins prestigious concerto competition

Riya Hamie, Y12 A level music, successfully auditioned for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain 2022 and was offered a seat as the co-principal cellist. She will also be the principal cellist in one of the NYO Winter Concerts, at the Barbican on 3 Jan 2022.

More fantastic news is that on 20th November, she won the prestigious Peter Morrison Concerto Competition at the Royal College of Music Junior Department (RCMJD) playing the monumental Dvorak Cello Concerto in B minor.  There was a record number of thirty-five entries (all instruments) from students in Y12 & Y13 and extension year, of which five players were selected from the preliminary round by the adjudicators to go through the final round two weeks after, where they were required to play the full concerto to a public audience and a panel of four adjudicators. The standard of playing was incredibly high as many contestants are also members/section principals of the National Youth Orchestra.

As the prizewinner, she will give a public performance of the full concerto with the RCMJD Symphony Orchestra in the RCM Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall on 19 March 2022.
